Q. What is Praxis all about?
A. Praxis- Institute for Participatory Practices is a non-profit development support organisation that is committed to the democratisation of development processes. The organisation believes that true democracy involves affirmative action to empower the poor and marginalised sections of the society so that they have a say in their own development. Q. What is TheWorkshop all about?
A. TheWorkshop is an annual, international event that brings together development workers, policy makers and proactive individuals from across the world to share information, experiences, and keep themselves abreast of the latest in the field of participatory development. It is an effort by Praxis- Institute of Participatory Practices to promote participation in all forms of human development. This will be the fourteenth edition in the series of TheWorkshop organised by Praxis.

Q. What is the general outline of the workshop?
A. Following is the general outline of the workshop:

  • An introductory, common module on Attitudes, Behaviours and Change (ABC) facilitated by Robert Chambers
  • Interactive classroom sessions within each thematic module
  • Practical sessions in the field, hosted by locally renowned organisations
  • Evening talks on diverse development related topics
  • Film screenings on issues of relevance
  • Thematic group discussions, workshop experience sharing and collective reflection
  • Introduction to the latest publications and reference materials
  • Field work in rural and peri-urban locations as appropriate to the module content

Q. Who all generally facilitate this workshop?
A. The past facilitators of the various modules include eminent names such as Robert Chambers, John Gaventa, Barry Underwood, Sam Joseph, Josh Levene, Sheelu Francis, Anindo Banerjee, Tom Thomas, M J Joseph, Shailesh Kumar, Somesh Kumar, Cherrian Matthews, and others.

Q. How much is the workshop fee?
A. For the year 2010 the workshop fee is:

  • INR 27,000 for Indian participants
  • INR 32,000 for Indian participants from bilateral and multilateral agencies
  • € 1400 for foreign participants

Q. What all does the fee include?
A. The workshop fee includes the following:

  • Workshop kit and materials
  • Accommodation at KILA and the field work venue: 9 days from the afternoon of 22nd September 2010 to the morning of 1st October 2010
  • Meals at KILA and field work venues
  • All charges and travel costs associated with field work

The fee does not include participant's travel or conveyance to and from the venue at the start and end of the workshop. Participants arriving before 22 nd September and staying beyond the noon of 1 st October will have to pay for their food and lodging.

Q. How do I apply for a scholarship?
A. The workshop is self-funded event and there are very few scholarship options available. For further details click here.

Q. How can I pay?
A. If you are a foreign participant, please email us for further details. If you are an Indian participant, you can pay either through DD, bank cheque or by cash at our office in Delhi. In the case of cash payments, please contact us first specifying the date you would come by and we will confirm our availability.

Q. Where is the workshop happening this year?
A. The Workshop10 will be organised at the campus of Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), in Thrissur, Kerala, India.

Q. How can we get to KILA?
A. Participants can reach Kila by train as well as by flight. For participants who are flying, the closest airport, Kochi/Cochin (called Nedeumbaserry International Airport) is 79 kilometers away from KILA. Participants arriving by train can alight at Thrissur railway station, which is approximately 10-12 kilometers away from KILA.

Q. Will someone pick me from the station/airport? If not, how do I reach?
A. No pick-up service will be provided. KILA is situated at Mulamkunnathukavu, 11 km north of Thrissur city on the Thrissur- Shornur Road. Pre-paid taxis are available from the airport to take you to the venue. For participants arriving by train direct taxi/auto rickshaw and bus services are available to reach KILA campus.

Q. How do I apply for an Indian visa?
A. For all international participants requiring a visa, once your registration at the workshop has been confirmed, through the details you provide us in the application form, we will send you a visa invitation letter. The visa application process has to be initiated and followed up by you.

Q. Can I get a single room?
A. No. All accommodation will be on a twin-sharing basis. There will be no exceptions.
